The Gift of a Newborn and the Festive Christmas Feast

A Baby Changes Everything: Embracing New Life and Cherished Traditions

“Nonna” (grandmother) and her very first bambino!

Music has a unique way of capturing the essence of life’s most profound moments. Many of you are likely familiar with the moving song by Faith Hill, “A Baby Changes Everything.” It is a beautiful, soul-stirring melody that reflects on the arrival of the newborn Jesus and the transformative impact He had on Mary’s life. While the song carries a deep spiritual weight, its title resonates with anyone who has ever welcomed a new life into their family. This past November, my family experienced this firsthand, and it truly changed everything for us.

If you have noticed my absence from the blog lately, I want to start by saying how much I’ve missed this community. Life, as they say, happens. The past year has been a complex journey—a tapestry woven with threads of both deep sorrow and immense joy. We began the year facing the challenging loss of my father, followed by the passing of several dear friends and relatives. It was a season of grieving and reflection. However, the circle of life is persistent and awe-inspiring. As 2013 drew to a close, the shadows of sadness were replaced by the radiant light of a new beginning.

The Busy Rhythm of Career and Family Life

Beyond the personal transitions, my professional life has been incredibly demanding. For those who may not know, I work in university education. The final two months of the academic year are a whirlwind of activity. My days are totally and completely focused on students, ensuring they meet their graduation requirements and transition successfully into the next chapter of their lives. If you have ever been the parent of a college student, you understand the urgency of that final semester—both for the student’s future and for the relief of finally seeing those tuition bills come to an end!

In addition to the seasonal rush, I received a promotion to a more demanding position in August. This new role required a significant amount of my time and energy, leaving very little room for blogging or experimental cooking. During this time, my husband—affectionately known as “Mr. Meat and Potatoes”—stepped up to help in the kitchen. While he transitioned into retirement, he did his absolute best to meet the high culinary expectations of our household. We might have relied on a bit more take-out than usual, but I give him full credit for his effort. He may not be a gourmet chef, but his willingness to try means the world to me. After all, I can’t change the oil in my car or fix a leaky pipe, so we make a good team by balancing our strengths and weaknesses.

Because of these shifts in my professional and personal life, blogging about recipes naturally took a backseat. Sometimes, life requires us to be fully present in the moment, and this was one of those seasons where family and career needed my undivided attention.

Prioritizing Family and Heartfelt Traditions

Another significant change this year was my mother moving in with us for the winter months. Since becoming widowed in January, she needed the warmth and companionship of family. “Family First” has always been my guiding philosophy, and having her with us has been a blessing. For Thanksgiving, we decided to take a break from the routine and spent a chilly but beautiful week at Hilton Head Island, South Carolina.

The cold weather on the island didn’t stop us from having a wonderful time. In fact, it provided the perfect excuse to stay indoors and reconnect with my love for quilting. I spent those quiet hours crafting a soft, flannel quilt for the new baby boy we were all so anxiously awaiting. There is something incredibly therapeutic about working with fabric, especially when the end result is meant to wrap a newborn in warmth and love.

A New Furry Addition: Meeting Little Miss Mimi

As if the anticipation of a new grandson wasn’t enough, life threw another little surprise our way. In November, I discovered a tiny, abandoned kitten at a local gas station. She was shivering under a dumpster, seeking shelter from the freezing winds. My heart went out to her immediately. Armed with some soft cat food, I managed to win her trust. She couldn’t resist the meal, and soon enough, she was letting me pick her up.

I brought her home that cold winter night, and she has since become a beloved member of our household. We named her Miss Mimi. She has transitioned from a starving stray to a pampered kitten enjoying life on our family acreage alongside our other animals. Her playful energy has brought an extra spark of joy to our home during these winter months.

The Arrival of the Grandson: A Momentous Event

Finally, the moment we had all been waiting for arrived. My daughter and her husband welcomed their newborn son into the world. To say this is a “big deal” would be an understatement. Since my two adult children have indicated that this will likely be the only grandchild in our family, he is truly the center of our universe. A baby truly does change everything! Becoming a “Nonna” is a role I embrace with all my heart, and I look forward to sharing more about our little bundle of joy as he grows.

Celebrating Christmas 2013: Aesthetics and Flavors

Christmas this year was a celebration of family, food, and the beauty of tradition. I wanted our home to reflect the warmth we felt in our hearts. Our fireplace mantel was decorated with a woodland theme, featuring greens, creams, and browns. To add a Southern touch, I included gold-kissed dogwood blossoms, twigs, and river stones, creating a rustic yet elegant look.

The kitchen, or the cucina, was the heart of the home, as it always is during the holidays. Having my mother, now a great-grandmother or Bisnonna, helping out made the preparations even more special. We focused on the recipes that have defined our family gatherings for generations.

Holiday Dining and Timeless Recipes

Our Christmas table was set with vibrant colors—greens, yellows, and coral-rose tones. This cheerful palette set the stage for our traditional holiday meal. No Christmas in our family would be complete without Tortellini in Brodo. This dish is our oldest holiday food tradition. The delicate pasta filled with savory goodness and served in a clear, rich broth is the ultimate comfort food. It connects us to our ancestors and reminds us of our roots.

For the main course, we always splurge on a Prime Rib with Au Jus. This is the same recipe we served for years in our restaurant, and it never fails to impress. It’s a succulent, flavorful centerpiece that makes the holiday feel truly indulgent. Following the savory feast, we enjoyed a traditional Southern Red Velvet Cake from Sweet Expressions Bakery. This cake is legendary, featuring a rich, ruby-colored crumb and a secret recipe that results in the most decadent texture imaginable.

To end the day, “Nonna and Papa” sipped hot cappuccinos from our new mugs, enjoying the last slices of cake in the quiet glow of the Christmas lights. It was a perfect conclusion to a day filled with gratitude and love.

Reflecting on the True Spirit of the Season

While the food and decorations are wonderful, we never lose sight of the true meaning of the season. Every year, I set up a hand-made Nativity scene that my mother created for me back in the 1970s. It is a humble but beautiful reminder of the birth that changed the world. In our household, the Christmas season isn’t just a single day; it begins on Christmas Eve and extends until January 6th, the Feast of the Epiphany. This marks the day the three Wise Men visited the baby Jesus, symbolizing the revelation of God incarnate to the world.

As we move into the new year, my wish for all of you is that the joyful and loving spirit of Christmas remains in your hearts throughout the entire year. Whether you are welcoming a new baby, a rescued pet, or simply a new perspective on life, may you find peace and happiness in the small moments that change everything. Thank you for being a part of my journey, and I look forward to sharing more recipes and stories with you soon!
