A Culinary Journey Through Chicago: Exploring the Best Italian Food and Hidden Gems
Chicago is a city that resonates with the history of immigrants, and perhaps nowhere is this more evident than in its culinary scene. For food enthusiasts, particularly those with a passion for authentic Italian flavors, the Windy City offers an endless array of trattorias, pizzerias, and high-end eateries. This series is dedicated to exploring the rich tapestry of Chicago’s Italian food scene, moving through the bustling downtown streets and into the heart of historic neighborhoods. Our journey begins not in Chicago itself, but with a surprising discovery during a layover—a reminder that great food can find you when you least expect it.

The Unexpected Prelude: A Taste of Europe in Atlanta
Before arriving in Chicago for a whirlwind Italian food tour, my journey involved a brief layover at the Atlanta Airport. Airports are often synonymous with rushed meals and uninspired fast food, but hidden within the terminals of Hartsfield-Jackson is a sweet little gem known as Café Intermezzo. This spot is an incredible escape from the hectic bustle of one of the world’s busiest airports. Inspired by the traditional European coffeehouses of the 19th century, Café Intermezzo invites travelers to slow down, sit back, and indulge in a moment of tranquility.
The atmosphere here is designed to refuel both the body and the soul. During my two-hour layover, I found myself immersed in a menu that felt far removed from the typical airport fare. I started with a refreshing Mixed Green Salad, which featured vibrant berries and a tangy Champagne Vinaigrette, all balanced by the creamy richness of crumbled Goat Cheese. It was the perfect light start to a journey centered around indulgence.

Following the salad, I opted for something more comforting: a steaming bowl of French Onion soup. The broth was deep and savory, topped with a generous layer of melted Gruyere cheese that stretched with every spoonful. It was a masterclass in classic comfort food. To finish this unexpected feast, I couldn’t resist a slice of White Chocolate and Amaretto Cheesecake. This wasn’t just any dessert; it was an enormous, fluffy slice of cheesecake heaven that combined the sweetness of white chocolate with the distinct, nutty aroma of Amaretto.

Finding this level of culinary quality in an airport setting was a revelation. It set a high bar for the rest of the trip and served as a reminder that the journey is just as important as the destination. With my appetite whetted and my spirits high, I boarded my flight to Chicago, ready to dive into the city’s legendary food scene.

Arriving in the Windy City: Luxury at the Westin Chicago River North
Upon landing in Chicago, the energy of the city was immediately palpable. I took a taxi directly to the heart of downtown, heading toward the beautiful River Walk area. The Chicago River Walk is a vibrant pedestrian waterfront located on the south bank of the main branch of the Chicago River. It is a hub for dining, entertainment, and simply soaking in the city’s architectural marvels.

I checked into the Westin Chicago River North, a hotel known for its prime location and exceptional service. To my delight, I received a complimentary upgrade to a spacious room on the Executive Guest floor. Being at the top of the hotel offered a stunning perspective of the skyline. The Westin’s famous “Heavenly Beds” lived up to their name, promising a restful night after what I knew would be a long day of walking and eating.

The hotel serves as a perfect base for exploring the city. Whether you are there for business or pleasure, the proximity to the theater district, high-end shopping on the Magnificent Mile, and the numerous dining options makes it an ideal choice for any traveler. After settling in, the real exploration began.

Golden Hour Cocktails and Architectural Wonders
As the sun began to dip below the horizon, casting a golden glow over the steel and glass skyscrapers, my son and I set out for a stroll. Chicago’s architecture is world-renowned, and walking through the downtown area feels like moving through an open-air museum. We marveled at the blend of historic structures and modern marvels that define the skyline.

Our destination for pre-dinner drinks was the Langham Hotel, one of Chicago’s most prestigious five-star establishments. The Langham is housed in a Mies van der Rohe-designed building and exudes an air of sophisticated luxury. As someone who deeply appreciates art, I was immediately struck by the breathtaking glass artwork suspended from the ceiling in the reception area. The delicate glass bubbles looked like shimmering droplets frozen in time.

We made our way to the cocktail lounge at the top of the hotel. The lounge is a masterpiece of modern decor, offering panoramic views that are hard to beat. The atmosphere was lively, filled with professionals enjoying post-work drinks and travelers soaking in the ambiance. To kick off our Italian-themed weekend, we ordered glasses of crisp, cold Prosecco. The effervescence and bright notes of the Italian sparkling wine were exactly what we needed to transition into the evening.

Since I was still adjusting to the time zone change and had a long night ahead, I also ordered a double-espresso latte. It was expertly prepared, and despite a small delay in service, the staff was incredibly professional, even offering the drink on the house as a gesture of hospitality. It is these small touches that define the luxury experience in Chicago.

Dining in the Theater District: A Night at Trattoria 10
Travel plans don’t always go exactly as expected. Due to a flight delay, we missed our original dinner reservations at Spacca Napoli, a legendary spot known for its authentic Neapolitan pizza. Pivoting quickly, we secured a table at Trattoria 10, located in the bustling theater district. While the decor felt a bit reminiscent of a commercial Italian chain—something we found slightly amusing given the price point—the service was exemplary from start to finish.

We began our meal with two antipasti. The first was house-made gnocchi served in a butter-gorgonzola sauce, garnished with almonds and fresh herbs. The gnocchi themselves were spectacular—light, pillowy, and perfectly cooked. However, the sauce left us wanting more. While the butter base was silky, the pungent, earthy flavor of the gorgonzola was almost undetectable. A bit more boldness in the cheese department would have elevated the dish from good to unforgettable.

Our second starter was a lamb carpaccio. It was a well-prepared dish, though lamb is a bolder choice for carpaccio than the traditional beef. It was enjoyable, but it reinforced my preference for the classic beef preparation when it comes to raw, thinly sliced meats.

The highlight of the meal arrived in the form of Butternut Squash Ravioli. Even though squash is typically a seasonal autumn ingredient, this house-made pasta was superb. The texture of the pasta was flawless, proving that when the dough is made correctly, it can shine even with simple accompaniments. On the other hand, my son’s cavatelli was a bit of a disappointment, as it resembled an Asian stir-fry in both appearance and flavor profile—a confusing choice for a traditional Italian trattoria.

We concluded the evening with a caramel-flavored budino. Budino is an Italian pudding that has gained immense popularity in the US over the last few years. This version was topped with crunchy amaretti cookie crumbles and a tart berry sauce. It provided a light and satisfying end to a meal that had its ups and downs but ultimately contributed to the story of our Chicago food adventure.

Looking Ahead: The Heart of Little Italy
While Trattoria 10 provided a solid introduction to downtown dining, I still look forward to visiting Spacca Napoli in the future. However, the first day in Chicago was merely a warm-up. The beauty of this city lies in its diversity; while downtown offers luxury and theater-district glamor, the true soul of Italian Chicago often resides in its historic neighborhoods.
Tomorrow, the journey continues as we head to the legendary Little Italy. This neighborhood is steeped in tradition, home to family-owned businesses that have spanned generations. We plan to spend the day strolling through the streets, visiting iconic delis, and sampling the recipes that have defined Chicago’s Italian-American identity for decades. From authentic beef sandwiches to hand-rolled pasta, the flavors of Little Italy await.

Stay tuned for the next installment of this series as we dig deeper into the culinary heart of the Windy City. Whether you are a local or planning your first visit, there is always something new to discover in Chicago’s ever-evolving food landscape.
